Women hike alone?

As a woman, I found this article interesting: Is it smart (or safe) for women to go hiking alone?

Pretty interesting topic. Anyone care (or brave enough!) to wade into this discussion?

Personally, I would choose carefully where I go hiking if I were to go alone. But honestly I'm not a solo hiker. I think the main concern for me wouldn't necessarily be about being attacked but something like injuring myself, falling, getting lost, sick, etc. I guess in my world those are the things that concern me most when out hiking.

Thanks for that link, Interesting read / topic. I rarely go into the woods / river by myself, usually with my Brothers, or Dad. And not more than 4 or 5 miles from a main road. I really dont see any difference whether Male, or Female...Need to be armed..and aware of your surroundings.

Well I'm not a lady and I'm not much of a hiker. But I've grown up in the woods (Eastern Kentucky) and going into the hills alone never really bothered me, I will say that it's a good idea to always take a firearm or two along if you are hiking or riding an ATV, and to always be highly cautious on foot or on 4-wheels, because one never knows for sure what is just up around the bend. an extra supply of fuel helps a rider get home (for hikers that would be food and water).

Never take any risk that isn't needed, or a route that you aren't sure of,listen to your instincts and always be on alert.

Its probably a good idea to take your dog with you, if you have one..My Boxer (Buster Douglas) loves to hit the trails, He likes to scout ahead, and is probably more aware of whats going on around us than i am. But that still wouldn't stop somebody from watching you for a while, then picking you off real quiet from a distance with a .22, or crossbow....Then dragging you off somewhere...........
